This year marks two significant anniversaries for Ulysse Nardin: the brand’s 180th anniversary and the 25th anniversary of the Freak collection. To celebrate these milestones, Ulysse Nardin has launched a new series of Freak watches. We’ve already seen the limited-edition Super Freak and the playful Freak [X Gumball 3000].
Now we have three new, redesigned Freak X models.
These three watches come in three colorways, feature interchangeable straps, upgraded movements, and a redesigned, more compact 41mm case (from 43mm) with a sapphire crystal.

Unleash Your Wild Side In hindsight, it’s easy to see how the Freak drove the watchmaking world wild when it launched in 2001. It originated as a carousel "tourbillon" project by Ulysse Nardin, based on an idea by Carole Forestier, who had just won the Abraham-Louis Breguet Foundation Prize for her central carousel tourbillon design.
Ludwig Oxlin subsequently refined Forestier’s ideas, moving the mainspring below the movement to improve power reserve and modifying the inline gear train and regulator to allow it to function as a time display, among other things.
Most importantly, the Freak was one of the first watch collections to experiment with silicon components. This was revolutionary at the time, as there was considerable skepticism surrounding the material.
In fact, a decade later, silicon remained a source of skepticism, as evidenced by a 2012 New York Times article that detailed some of the lingering concerns and explained that some watchmakers believed silicon components were "extremely fragile to assemble and operate and impossible to repair using traditional restoration techniques."
By 2012, Forestier, who had moved to Cartier, defended silicon, telling The Times that its use was "just one step in a new world of watch materials," and that "the ultra-high precision of microelectronics will open up a whole host of possibilities."

Now, the future Forestier predicted has arrived: the completely redesigned Freak X.
A New Generation of Weirdos
The Freak series was initially designed as a "laboratory on the wrist." The Freak X, launched in 2019, is a testament to this evolution. Positioned as the "entry-level" model in the Freak series, its unique feature is its crown-based winding mechanism instead of a bezel.
If the Freak X aimed to make the Freak more accessible to enthusiasts, this year’s new model caters to the demand for a more compact watch (the case diameter has been reduced from 43mm to 41mm), making it more comfortable to wear.
And they’re more fun! This generation of Ulysse Nardin comes in three colors (grey, blue, and gold) and nine interchangeable straps.
Let’s briefly recap. This entirely new wearing experience wouldn’t be possible without a simplified and redesigned movement.
Ulysse Nardin has, for the first time, used the DIAMonSIL silicon escapement in its Freak X collection, paired with a silicon balance wheel and hairspring to enhance accuracy, efficiency, and durability. The brand states that this high-tech surface treatment acts as a protective layer, increasing the hardness and resistance to mechanical stress of the components, thus extending their lifespan (2012 skeptics, you’ll see!).

The new UN-232 movement is based on 35 Freak patents and incorporates five new patents, including the DIAMonSIL escapement, a temperature-compensated silicon hairspring, an elliptical hairspring geometry, optimized pivot contact, and an axial assembly scheme for silicon components. Furthermore, the movement features an oversized silicon balance wheel and hairspring crafted by Ulysse Nardin’s silicon lab, Sigatec.
These three watches also feature several other innovations, including a unibody case made of 80% recycled steel (or full rose gold) and a more elaborately decorated hour wheel than previous models.
